Of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully May 18, 2009. Born in Hillview, N.L., he was a son of the late Elias and Edith (Churchill) Avery. He was a veteran of the Second World War in the Merchant Marines. He was an avid bird-watcher, hunter, fisherman and enjoyed camping. He enjoyed crosswords, hockey, cooking and bingo. Ross enjoyed working with his hands and doing his own handyman repairs around the house. He loved dogs, and had them most of his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Joseph) Avery; daughters, Gloria Bernard, both of Dartmouth; and Katherine Kelly, Corner Brook, N.L.; sisters, Marita Russell, Corner Brook; Geneva (Walter) Loucks, Lincoln Park, Mich.; Brenda (Stan) Halfyard, Woody Point, N.L.; brothers, Austin (Marie), Mission, B.C.; and Leander, Clarenville, N.L.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Dauphinee and Audrey; brother, Ellis. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 21, with a memorial service to be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, both in A.L.
