NORTHFIELD, Mass. -- Stanley G. Barfitt, 94, of 217 Birnam Road, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at his home following an illness.
He was born on July 29, 1909, in Long Beach, Newfoundland, Canada, the son of Llewelyn and Mary (Veye) Barfitt.
He moved to Long Island at an early age and eventually worked on fishing boats and in construction there. He loved boats and saltwater fishing.
He was a contractor for many years, building custom homes. He also worked at Hofstra University as head of maintenance before retiring.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth (Miller) Barfitt; two sons, Robert and his wife, Alice, of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Ronald and his wife, Evelyn of Northfield; two daughters, Cynthia Knudsen of Northport, N.Y., and Deborah L. Johnson and her husband, Rodney L. Sr., of Putney, Vt.; a sister, Annie Foulton of Haverhill; six grandchildren, Bonnie Ross, Randy Knudsen, Barbara Adams, Ronnie Barfitt Jr. and Roxanne Banks; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Another grandson, Douglas Mecheski, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, with the Rev. Lloyd Parrill, officiating.
Burial will be in Green River Cemetery in Greenfield.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 6-8 p.m.
