- In WW2 Moses was in the Royal Navy Tenth Contingent with 190 men. His official number was 216684. He is listed as a passenger on the Nerrissa arriving the Liverpool on 27 August 1940 from St. John's via Halifax.
Moses is listed as a passenger on the SS Fort Townshend on 19 June 1945 travelling from St. John's arriving in New York on 26 June 1945. He was listed as single, a naval seaman, 6' tall, black hair and blue eyes. He was going to meet up with the H.M.S. Saker in Brooklyn, New York.
Moses and Margaret lived in Deer Lake for a number of years before moving to Clarenville.
Moses died on 16 October 1992 in St. John's and was buried on 19 October 1992 in the Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery. His obituary was printed in The Evening Telegram:
Passed peacefully away at the DVA Pavillion, St. John's on October 16 1992 in his 80th year, Moses Smith Sr. of Clarenville. Leaving to mourn his sad loss wife Margaret; daughters: Cecilia; Pauline (Barry); son Michael (Tina), residing in Clarenville; one brother Abraham, Little Hearts Ease; also four granddaughters and one grandson. Resting at Fewer's Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral service to take place from St. Mary's Anglican Church, Clarenville on Monday, October 19th at 2:30 p.m. Interment at the Interdenominational Cemetery, Manitoba Drive. Donations may be made to DVA Pavillion, St. John's.
