- Gloria Sylvia Dunkin of Calgary, beloved wife of John "Jack" Dunkin was called peacefully away to her eternal rest at the age of 92 at the Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 with her close family by her side.
Gloria was born in Sydney Nova Scotia on May 9,1926. She was the youngest of six children: three boys and three girls. After the Second World War, she followed her older sister Thelma to Edmonton where she was employed by the Provincial Government as an administrative assistant. She met her soul mate Jack at a dance and after he had finished University; they married in July of 1951. Gloria's husband was a mining engineer and thus the family moved to Ontario to Saskatchewan and back to a different town in Ontario while she had first a girl and then three boys. The family finally settled in Labrador City Newfoundland where she remained for ten years.
In Labrador, Gloria was very involved in the building of a church in which she was very active. She and her husband were avid curlers and she also loved gardening.
When Jack went to Australia to work for a year in 1970, Gloria and the boys lived in Calgary. Two other moves followed; once again to northern Saskatchewan and then to Delta B.C.
In 1980 Gloria finally settled in Calgary where she lived for 34 happy years. Gloria was continually knitting throughout her life. She knitted for the family, for the church, for charity and just because she loved to give to others.
She got to work again with the family grown up at the old Woodwards. She really enjoyed meeting all of the people and finding all of the bargains which she loved to share with everyone. She and Jack also enjoyed square dancing, which she was proud to do at the 1988 Olympics. She and her husband played bridge on a regular basis. Jack and Gloria started to travel for pleasure and made numerous trips to Europe on bus tours.
After Jack passed, Gloria stayed very active in her church. She kept playing bridge and looking after her large garden despite developing a bee/wasp allergy late in life. Her granddaughters replaced Jack on two more trips to Europe.
In 2012 Gloria suffered a mild stroke and this eventually resulted in her not being able to talk. This did not stop her from communicating in her own way. She broke both of her hips and this did not stop her from walking!!
Special thanks to all staff at Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge for all of their kind loving care. The staff there are truly earth's angels.
She was predeceased by her husband Jack Dunkin and her son Bruce.
Gloria is survived by a daughter Janice Graves of Oxford Station, Ontario and two sons, David Dunkin (JoAnn) of Fort Macleod, Alberta and Glen Dunkin (Gina) of Edmonton, Alberta. She was blessed with three grandchildren, Steven (Whitney), Jamie (James) andLisa. She was also very proud of her four great grandchildren.
