Fred died on 18 February 1999 in Clarenville. He was buried on 20 February 1999 in the Pleasant Street Cemetery in Clarenville. His obituary was printed in The Telegram:
Passed peacefully away at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Thursday, February 18, 1999, Frederick G. Smith of Clarenville, aged 88 years. Predeceased by wife Leah, 1979. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are three sons: Sam Parsons (Edna), Mount Pearl, Jacob Smith (Hilda) and Heber Smith (Carmel), both of Clarenville; six grandchildren: Rodney, Freddie, Blair, Denise, Leah and Andrew; one great-granddaughter Sarah; four sisters: Susie Avery, Bessie Avery (Edwin), Dorothy Stringer and Edna Spurrell; also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at Fewer's Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 1999 from St. Mary's Anglican Church, Clarenville. Interment to follow at Pleasant Street Cemetery, Clarenville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Anglican Church, Clarenville.
