- Mike worked with Newfoundlan Power for 24 years. He was a dedicated executive member of the IBEW Local 1620. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 27. In 1999 he was recognized for his service by being named Legionnaire of the Year.
Mike died on 2 August 2000 in the Health Sciences Hospital in St. John's. He was buried on 5 August 2000 in the Interdemoninational Cemetery in Clarenville. His death announcement appeared in The Telegram:
Passed peacefully away at Health Sciences Center, St. John's on Wednesday, August 2, 2000, Michael Smith of Clarenville, in his 47th year. Predeceased by father Moses Smith. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Tina (nee Barry) of 26 years; daughters: Alicia and Melissa; mother Margaret Smith, Clarenville; sisters: Pauline (Barry Hynes) and Cecilia (Sis), both of Clarenville; half-sister Mary Smith, Gooseberry Cove; half-brothers: Greg Ivany (Ruby), Georges Brook and Lewis Seward (Janet), Ottawa; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Resting at Fewer's Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2000 from Our Lady Of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, Clarenville. Interment at Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery. In his memory, flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
