Description |
It is commonly held that the Stringers in Newfoundland descend from the Joseph Stringer, born 1809 at Guysborough, NS to Joseph and Catherine (Henline) Stringer. That may not be so, given that a Joseph Stringer died September 20, 1810 at age 16 months at Guysborough. Quite possibly, another son given the same name was born a little later and HE was actually the Stringer that came to Grates Cove, and from whom ‘our’ Stringers descend.
The Caplin Cove branch (through Nathaniel and Amelia) and the Little Heart’s Ease branch (through James and Patience) come from the first marriage of Joseph Stringer to Elizabeth Janes. The St. John’s branch also appear to be part of this line, but are not included in the trees below, they being not part of our region.
The Hodge’s Cove branch comes from the second marriage of Joseph to a widow Eliza (nee ??) Binson. Following Joseph’s death, Eliza married a widower James Drover of Hodge’s Cove and moved with her son and two daughters to her new husband’s home.
Note: Google searches reveal a number of Stringers who lived in St. John’s in the 1800’s, but who may not be connected with ‘our’ Stringers at all. |
