On May 29th, 1983, the community of Long Beach lost one of its most respected citizens in the person of William Avery , in his 88th year.
"Uncle Will" as he was better known, was a veteran of World War II having served in His Majesty's Navy. He was a life long member of the Loyal Orange Lodge for quite a number of years and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, receiving his 55 year membership pin just a couple of years ago.
His health failed him a year ago and within the last three months he was confined to his bed most of the time. During this time he spent about a month at hospital , twice at Come By Chance and once at the Hearth Sciences Centre.
Left to mourn are wife, Susie, two sons, Wilson and Eldred both at Long Beach; two brothers, Alfred at Long Beach and Edwin at Clarenville; five grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends.
The funeral took place at Long Beach, United Church, conducted by Rev. H. Ivany and Miss Joan Berge. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Clarenville Branch, and members of the Loyal Orange Lodge attended.
The hymn "Does Jesus Care" was requested by the family and was sung by Rev. H. Ivany. Remains were laid to rest at the United Church Cemetery. Donations in memory of the deceased were made to the Kidney Foundation.
