1 | Caleb and Catherine (Barrett) Peddle | Caleb Peddle moved with his family to Hodge’s Cove a year or two before his brother John, probably in 1866. He owned a 65 ton schooner named Laburnum built in 1879. It was lost at sea a couple of years later and the registry closed in 1886. Caleb was a fisherman, but also played a part in the building a number of boats and schooners. | 462 | 177 | 0 |

11 | John and Virtue (Coombs) Peddle | John Peddle came to Hodge’s Cove with his family in 1868. It was through John that his brother Caleb acquired the land that the Peddles came to occupy in Hodge’s Cove. He had been here a couple of years earlier and told Caleb about this property. Caleb in turn staked the property and shared it with John, The dividing line was the Lower Cove Brook, and the “Wood Path”, Caleb taking the westerly portion, and John the easterly portion. All this land has since become common property for all John’s and Caleb’s descendants. John was also a fisherman. He was nicknamed “Pirate Jack”! | 155 | 60 | 0 |
12 | John Balsom | While I could not confirm for sure - it is believed that the three Balsom families of SW Arm are descendants of John Balsom and Priscilla Green of Scilly Cove (Winterton). The fourth Balsom family - John Robert Balsom married Priscilla Ann Balsom who was the daughter of William Henry Balsom who we believe was the son of John Balsom and Priscilla Green. | 241 | 117 | 9 |

14 | Joseph and Elizabeth (Janes) Stringer | It is commonly held that the Stringers in Newfoundland descend from the Joseph Stringer, born 1809 at Guysborough, NS to Joseph and Catherine (Henline) Stringer. That may not be so, given that a Joseph Stringer died September 20, 1810 at age 16 months at Guysborough. Quite possibly, another son given the same name was born a little later and HE was actually the Stringer that came to Grates Cove, and from whom ‘our’ Stringers descend. The Caplin Cove branch (through Nathaniel and Amelia) and the Little Heart’s Ease branch (through James and Patience) come from the first marriage of Joseph Stringer to Elizabeth Janes. The St. John’s branch also appear to be part of this line, but are not included in the trees below, they being not part of our region. The Hodge’s Cove branch comes from the second marriage of Joseph to a widow Eliza (nee ??) Binson. Following Joseph’s death, Eliza married a widower James Drover of Hodge’s Cove and moved with her son and two daughters to her new husband’s home. Note: Google searches reveal a number of Stringers who lived in St. John’s in the 1800’s, but who may not be connected with ‘our’ Stringers at all. | 451 | 158 | 0 |
