Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 2, 1909, she was one of five daughters of William J. and Annie Blundell. Moving to Somerville, Massachusetts at an early age, she was educated in local schools and in 1927 graduated from Somerville High School. In 1933, she married Felomeno Joseph Berte at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Somerville. The couple resided in Somerville until moving here in 1972 following Mr. Berte's retirement. With her husband, Mrs. Berte volunteered many hours with St. Bernard's Bingo Games. Pre-deceased by her husband in 1992, and a daughter Catherine A. Banda in 1984, Mrs. Berte is survived by two sons, William Joseph Berte and his wife Laura of Revere, MA, Domenic J. Berte of Somerville; two daughters, Anne H. Berte of Tenants Harbor, Barbara L. Kathrein and her husband Dennis of Fallon, NV; two sisters, Phyllis Chadwick and her husband Alfred of Port Clyde, Jessie Button and her husband Al of Malden, MA; fourteen grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. | 1612 | BLUNDELL- Lilah Ann, age 95, passed peacefully away at the Dr. G.B.Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on February 13, 2016. Lilah married William George, better known as Willy George, in 1940. They had one son, Heber. She helped run a store on the other side of the harbour until Heber was 11 years old. While Willy George was a fisherman, Lilah opened up her own store, beginning with wallpaper, moving on to salt for the fishing boats and then to everything else. It was known as the store to find whatever you couldn't find anywhere else. Not only did she run a store, but she was the seamstress for many people including locals and weddings, sails for sailboats, and never followed a pattern. She was a wedding cake decorator, organist, member of the Home League, and LOBA. She has knitted hundreds of mittens and socks. For nearly eight years she resided at Miraquinn Hilltop Manor and will be sadly missed. Predeceased by husband William George, granddaughter Lori Lynn, brothers Ralph (Clemmie), Harold (Edna), Wilfred, sister in law Delphine, brothers in law George Patey, Kevin Smith, Cecil Mills and John Blundell. Leaving to mourn her only son Heber (Shirley), brother Reg (Una), sisters Florence (Doug), Bertha, Elsie (William), Jean, sister in law Wanda, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends at Miraquinn, and other family and friends. The funeral service took place on Tuesday, February 16, at 2:00 pm from the Salvation Army, Hickman's Harbour, officiated by Major Wavey Chaulk, with interment to following. | 1624 | Born in Lynn on April 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Emma B. (Goss) March. Violet was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School with the Class of 1940. She met Arthur H. Craik while volunteering for the VA in Charlestown while Arthur was home recovering from an illness derived from serving in the Marines during World War II. The couple later married on April 19, 1945 in Lynn with a reception at Happy Valley Golf Course, now Gannon's Golf Course, and settled in the Veteran's Village section of Lynn, and later moving to Saugus. Violet and Arthur spent 49 years in marriage together raising and caring for their family until Arthur's passing in December of 1994. Out of high school, Violet worked for Forbes Lithograph in Boston for some time before going to work for GE Riverworks and then at Sears Roebuck & Co. in Saugus where she spent over 30 years, retiring as the department stores' credit manager. Violet had a fond love for gardening and was extremely proud of her perennial garden. She served many years as the president of the Saugus Garden Club. She had a love of animals as well and was involved with MSPCA helping to care for needy pets. Violet was civic minded, assisting on the election committee for Janette Fasano for Selectman in Saugus and also helped push the effort for recycling in its infancy stages. Born June 28, 1929, in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland to parents Nehemiah Frost Benson and Sarah Jane (Maidment). Gladys grew up on Gilbert Street and after marrying, devoted most of her time caring for her children in their family home on Grenfell Heights, where she became a trusted loving friend to many. Being near to family was everything to Gladys and with her husband Rex, they moved to Edmonton Alberta in their retirement years to be closer to many of their large family. Gladys was a proud Matriarch of the Hayley clan, her enduring infectious smile, and quick-witted humour, with just a splash of sarcasm, was adorned by all that were fortunate to call her Mom, "Mudder", "The boss", Nan, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, friend and neighbour. She had such love for family and friends and will be so dearly missed, we cherish the memories and the profound impact that she has had on us all. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Rex and siblings David, Francis, and Chesley. She is survived by her cherished children, Sandra, David, Linda (Glenda), Lisa, Linda, Brenda, Gina, Glenn, Rex (Bud), Rhonda and Wayde. She is also survived by her loving siblings Marion, Phyllis, Fred, Harry, Doris, Margaret and Roger. Gladys's very large extended loving family includes five generations numbering 41 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. | 1638 | Brattleboro Reformer (VT) - July 15, 2004 NORTHFIELD, Mass. -- Stanley G. Barfitt, 94, of 217 Birnam Road, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at his home following an illness. He was born on July 29, 1909, in Long Beach, Newfoundland, Canada, the son of Llewelyn and Mary (Veye) Barfitt. He moved to Long Island at an early age and eventually worked on fishing boats and in construction there. He loved boats and saltwater fishing. He was a contractor for many years, building custom homes. He also worked at Hofstra University as head of maintenance before retiring. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth (Miller) Barfitt; two sons, Robert and his wife, Alice, of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Ronald and his wife, Evelyn of Northfield; two daughters, Cynthia Knudsen of Northport, N.Y., and Deborah L. Johnson and her husband, Rodney L. Sr., of Putney, Vt.; a sister, Annie Foulton of Haverhill; six grandchildren, Bonnie Ross, Randy Knudsen, Barbara Adams, Ronnie Barfitt Jr. and Roxanne Banks; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Another grandson, Douglas Mecheski, predeceased him. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, with the Rev. Lloyd Parrill, officiating. | 1639 | Bruce Lacey Published: January 20, 2014 Passed: January 05, 2014 Passed peacefully away at home Sunday, January 5, 2014, Bruce Lacey of Salisbury, NB, originally from Lewisporte, NL, at the age of 57, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Predeceaced by his father Gordon Lacey and father-in-law Reginald Peach. Leaving to mourn: his wife of 38 years, Winona (nee Peach); son Christopher (Carol); daughter Terri; and his grandchildren Charitie, Jaysen, Noriah, Gwen and Alana. Also left to mourn are his mother Elsie Lacey of Lewisporte; seven brothers, Ben (Marion), Roy (Jean), Harry (Marina), Brian (Joanne), Jim (Joan), Bill (Nancy), Gerald (Doreen); mother-in-law Barbara Peach; brothers-in-law Gregory (Sharon) and Garnett; sisters-in-law Beverly (Bill) and Jocelyn. Bruce will be missed by a large circle of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Bruce was born in Lewisporte; he moved to Labrador City in 1976 where he worked with the Iron Ore Company of Canada until his retirement in 2003, he then relocated to Salisbury, NB.
