All About a Tub of Butter.
LEVI DRODGE and his brother Thomas came up from the Battery this forenoon for some fishery supplies. After loading their punt with pork and flour, they pulled her down to Bowring Bros, wharf to take on board a tub of butter weighing 20 lbs., and valued at $4. Thomas Drodge brought the butter from the store and placed it on a puncheon of molasses that was on the wharf. He then went to speak to a friend, and on his return he missed the butter. He searched high and low, but couldn't find any trafce of it. The matter was reported by Levi to the police, and Constable John Simmonds was sent to hunt it up. Having received a slight clue, he went on hoard a schooner from Conception Harbor, where he found the tub of butter. It had been put on board of the schooner by one the crew in mistake, thinking that it was intended for them.

Mr. Adams and the Churchill Complaint
We have received a statement from Mr. Adams in reference to the letter of Ambrose Churchill in which the latter complained that his son left his work and volunteered, failed to pass the medical examinations and that he went back to his employer expecting to get his job again, but was refused any work or even wages due him at the time.
_______________

Nathan Churchill, son of Mr. Ambrose Churchill, Seward's Mill, worked with us last year. He didn't give us very good satisfaction. We decided not to have him any more. But this spring he came to us three times asking for a job, apparently as we were neighbors, and gave him work for the sake of his father, at $1.30 per day. His pay day was when I'd get the money when lumber was sold, same as last year. There wasn't any limit of time as to how long I would give him employment. He worked twelve days and a half; he did not give me one minute's notice that he was leaving until he left. At dinner hour he came to me ami said, what about my time. He said he was going to volunteer. I told him I couldn't help it. I had another young man here that had been down to volunteer a short while ago, but failed to pass. I had him engaged for a month, and to make disturbance he had been persuaded to go with him, which was useless for him to go. I gave Nathan his time without any hesitation. I told him I couldn't give him any money for a few days as I had to have time to get it. He didn't say anything to me about keeping his place if he failed to pass. He signed the agreement for his father to colled it, but he came back shortly after and I had another man in his place. I collected $10 for him which was the best I could do, until lumber was sold. I owe him the balance $8.25.
_____________

We are also informed that there are at present in the Newfoundland Regiment, three of the Adams' family and one in the Canadian forces, out 10 nephews of Mr. Adams, sr. It would appear therefore that the trouble about the wages and the non-taking back of Churchill was not due to th latter enlisting.

Nathan retired on his wife's birthday at the age of 75 years

1866 FALMOUTH, MA - Roland Stanford passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016 at Falmouth Hospital with his wife Phyllis Stanford by his side. Many family members and friends visited with and cared for him in the hours, days, and weeks prior.
Born in Oxford, Nova Scotia on Feb. 17, 1920, He was the son of Rev. Archibald Stanford and Gertrude (Myers) Stanford, the oldest of their 9 children. He was educated in "red schoolhouses all over PEI" until he went to Eastern Nazarene College at age 16 to finish High School, he was "born of the Spirit" while there in 1937 and went on graduate from ENC, class of 1944. After graduation he was offered a scholarship at Harvard Divinity School, but chose instead to pastor a small church in PEI. Ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in 1948, he pastored in Framingham, MA; Trenton, NS, and Montreal, Quebec where he met and married Phyllis Alexander (RN) in 1952. As Pastor, Pianist, Choir director, VBS director, Sunday School teacher, they made a talented, unified team. He adored her all his days, and she got the last smile of his life. They had three children, Geoffrey Stanford, (born Montreal, deceased 2002 amid great sorrow for the family), Lianne Carbone of Falmouth, MA, and Connie Stanford of Prescott, Arizona.
They also pastored in London, Ontario; Flushing, NY, Edison, NJ, Bath, Toronto, Ontario; and Cape Elizabeth. He did graduate work at McGill University and The Biblical Seminary in New York City. He drove a school bus for a time in Edison, NJ and served as Chaplain in Flushing, NY and Interim Chaplain at Maine Medical Center. He was youth camp director, and Phyllis, camp nurse, while they pastored on the New York and Maine districts. He volunteered with Ingraham Volunteers in Portland and rode a bike around Cape Elizabeth for 15 years. He loved gardening in Cape Elizabeth and Freeport, where they lived just after 'retirement'. He loved growing parsnips the most. These are only a few of the many things he did over the years with only one desire from his labors, that others would see Christ in him and find God. In his words, at the same time

1878 Florence Mary Bursey
(January 31, 2020)
Although our hearts are broken to lose a dear wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, we rejoice in a wonderful life of 91 years.
Florence was born in North River, Conception Bay to William and Jessie Fillier. She was pre-deceased by siblings, Walter (Anne), William (Jean), Elizabeth (William), Gorden (Florence) and Arthur (Marjorie).

The beloved wife of Don for 69 years. Much loved mother of Linda, Walter, Diane and Robert (Rob).
Mother-in-Law, known lovingly as Flossie, to George, Larry, Christine and Deanie.
Nan to George (Angel); Craig (Lynne); Cory (Nicole); Gerald (Lorna); and Robyn (Luke).
Nanny B. to Nathan, Sylvie, Clara, Cecile and Caterine; Chloe; Cole and Claire.
Also mourning her loss, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews and friends.
Florence will be remembered as a wife and mother who loved nothing more than having all of her family around. A woman of great faith who loved her God and her church. She will also be remembered for her quick wit; her card playing ability; expert knitting and completing the puzzles in the Downhomer magazine. How we will miss the laughter.

From Karen deSteuben Gallese
My grandmother was born in Nova Scotia. Her father died in a coal mine accident and shortly after she immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts to become a nanny to a wealthy family who live on Beacon Hill, the most opulent neighborhood in the city. My grandfather's ship came into the Port of Boston and they met. I don't know how or how long they knew each other before they married. My mother told me, that the family my grandmother worked for had asked her to accompany them to Europe and instead she chose to marry my grandmother. She also raised my Uncle Jerry, the son from my grandfather's first marriage. I know my mother's family struggled during our Depression in the 1920's -1930's. My mother often told us she owned two dresses; my grandmother would wash one out each night. My grandfather found it difficult to find work. He was a finished carpenter. My grandparents never owned their own home but rented, staying in the town where their children grew up, Saugus, Massachusetts. A couple of times, in exchange for rent, my grandfather would repair the house they were living in. A family story that was passed around was that he built a beautiful pool table in one house, but when it was time to move, the family had to leave it behind. It was too heavy and large to move.

One Christmas he carved a pair of wooden roller skates for my mother. She said she was embarrassed to wear them and tossed them out. As an adult, she regretted being so foolish and wished she had held on to them.

The family consisted of five girls and two boys (three with my Uncle Jerry). My mother was Ethel McMillan Blundell de Steuben, the third daughter. She died in 2002 at the age of 79, a year after my dad. My grandparents had twenty grandchildren; ten boys and ten girls.
