3259 | Stephen, son of Isaac and Anna (Gosse) Smith, and Prudence, daughter of John and Rachael (Smith) Smith moved to Hodge's Cove from Bishop's Cove around 1869 and lived on the beach near Wilson Smith's residence for about twelve years. The house was then hauled from the beach to the garden just in front of where Fred Smith's house is today. Isaac John was born on the beach in 1879 and William was born in 1881 after the house had been moved, indicating that the house was moved in 1880 or 1881. Stephen was a huge man standing six feet and six inches, weighing three hundred or more pounds. Here is part of a poem that was made up about him after a fight in a hall in Kelligrews. Apparently he won the fight. "Stephen Smith, he was so strong; he had two fists that hit like mauls; He swore that he would kill them all, that night in Kelligrews." The author is aware of three schooners that Stephen built or took part in building: Prowl 1891/92; Dandy 1896/97; Garnet around 1900. Isaac John took ownership of Garnet. | Smith, Stephen (I06)

Killed in Quebec Editor Evening Telegram. Dear Sir. The sad intelligence has just reached us of the untimely death of one of Terra Nova's sons in the person of Mr. Joshua Gooby, at Quebec. About five and a half years ago Mr. Gooby left his home Queen's Cove, Random, Trinity Bay, for Brooklyn, New York, USA., where he has since been employed as a carpentered. At Quebec was a ship which a short while ago had been rammed by another ship, and was needing repairs, and the company of which Mr. Gooby was an employee, undertook to carry out the contract. Mr. Gooby being one of their leading carpenters, was consequently sent over. Though no details have reached us yet, it is thought that at the close of his day's work Mr. Gooby was returning from work in an automobile, when by some accident happening the machine he was unfortunately killed. The news of his death has come with sadness to all who knew him, as he was a man beloved and respected by all. | Gooby, Joshua (I32351)
